Daly City – The City Council selected Michael P. Guingona to the post of Mayor at its annual reorganization meeting on December 7. This marks the fifth time Guingona has been selected as the City’s mayor since being elected to the City Council in 1993. Guingona accepted the gavel from outgoing Mayor Sal Torres, who will continue to serve as a City Councilmember. Carol Klatt was named Vice Mayor for the coming year-long term.

“I look forward to the challenges of next year,” Mayor Guingona said. “I’m happy I’m the one who will be in this position as we face these challenges.”

Prior to the reorganization of the City Council, outgoing Mayor Torres announced his selection for the Citizen and Youths of the Year. Daly City resident Susan Brissenden-Smith was named Citizen of the Year in recognition of her many years as a community volunteer and civic leader. Brissenden-Smith, a 29-year resident of Daly City is also a member of the Library Board of Trustees. She has played an instrumental role in fundraising efforts to support Daly City’s public libraries.

Jefferson High School senior Maritza Martin was chosen as the Youth of the Year, along with Pollicita Middle School student Cialina Moy. Martin has achieved a weighted grade point average of 4.19 at Jefferson, ranking third in her class. She’s also the editor-in-chief of the school’s student newspaper, The Tom Tom, is a member of the girls varsity soccer team, and serves as treasurer of the Latin Heritage Club.

Pollicita eighth-grader Cialina Moy was honored for commitment to community service. She helped organize the school’s “Pennies for Patients” campaign to support research in the prevention of childhood leukemia and planned a canned food drive to benefit needy families of Daly City. Moy maintains a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of Pollicita’s School Site Council representing student interests. She is the youngest person ever honored as Daly City’s Youth of the Year.
